There's a complicated and unfinished story of a sci-fi character behind this. He is the wise man of an oppressed people, forced to work the mines for the humans on Iapetus (one of the moons of Jupiter, I think, or is it Saturn? It's half black and half white, anyway, and has water ice on it)
